“Nine Miles,” dubbed “Spirit of Reggae,” marks both birth and resting site of the iconic “King of Reggae,” Bob Marley. Born in a rural cottage, Bob Marley spent his formative years in Nine Mile until age 13. His house and community gave Bob the inspiration for many of his well-known songs.
Scenic winding rural roads lead to Nine Mile village, nestled deep in the St. Ann countryside. Nine Mile is a very small village consisting of several modest homes.
Guided tours at Bob Marley’s Nine Miles, led by Rastafarians, include songs, memorabilia, and his “rock pillow” for visitors. The tour culminates at the ‘Marley mausoleum’.
The mausoleum contains two tombs, one where Bob Marley and his half-brother, Anthony Booker, are buried. The second tomb holds Cedella Booker, also known as “Mamma Marley,” Bob Marley’s mother.
Bob Marley’s birthplace is easily recognizable from the flags bearing Rastafarian colors and the compound wall surrounding the property. Outside of the compound walls, there are many members of the local community attempting to sell various goods and services, including tours of some interesting herb farms!
Nine Miles isn’t just a pilgrimage site; it’s a window into the life and legacy of a musical legend.
